Operating a Motorcycle in Iowa
In order to operate a motorcycle in the state of Iowa you must:
- Meet the state’s minimum age requirement
- Obtain an Iowa motorcycle license endorsement or motorcycle only license (you may also need to obtain a motorcycle instruction permit)
- Register your motorcycle with the state of Iowa
- Obtain insurance coverage that meets Iowa state requirements

Getting an Iowa Motorcycle License / Endorsement
According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, in addition to meeting the requirements necessary to obtain a regular driver’s license, individuals must apply for a motorcycle license endorsement or a Class M – Motorcycle License Only to operate a motorcycle.

Motorcycle Education & Training in Iowa
Motorcyclists should sign up for a motorcycle safety course. In Iowa, it is not mandatory to complete a motorcycle safety course to obtain an Iowa license endorsement or Class M – motorcycle license only, unless you are under the age of 18.
